Backus, E(dwin) Burdette (27 December 1888 - 7 July 1955)

A Unitarian minister, Backus signed Humanist Manifesto I. He was President of the American Humanist Association from 1944 to 1946.

“One of the basic needs of men in this catastrophic period, as always, is for a religion, a philosophy of life, which provides them with the guidance, the incentives, the methods which shall enable them to attain the deepest desires of their hearts,” he observed.

Ed Wilson in his book about the manifesto described Backus’s considerable efforts in helping with the editing of Humanist Manifesto I.

Edd Doerr wrote a biography of Backus that is found in the Dictionary of Unitarian Universalist Biography.
