Blau, Joseph Leon (6 May 1909 - 28 December 1986)

Professor emeritus and formerly chairman of the department of religion at Columbia University, Blau wrote Modern Varieties of Judaism (1972) and edited works concerning religious freedom. From 1968 to 1977, he headed Columbia's Department of Religion.

A renowned student of Judaica, he signed Humanist Manifesto II and listed himself in Who’s Who as “a long-time humanist.” In 1980, he signed the Secular Humanist Declaration.
